Botanical: Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’ Description: Commonly called Red Switch Grass, Panicum Shenandoah is valued primarily for its red summer/fall foliage. Slender blade leaves develop red tips in spring soon after growth starts. In summer they turn fully to red, and in fall the color deepens to a rich burgundy shade topped by pink flowers. Growth is to 3-1/2 to 5 feet. Plant habit is a mound of semi-arching foliage. Medium growth rate. Growing tips: Grasses are easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer in the spring at a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio). Mulch with organic material in the fall to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Grasses that die back completely in the winter can be cut back in the very early spring to rejuvenate the plant and evergreen varieties which survive the winter should only be cleaned up by removing dead growth.
