Botanical Name: Miscanthus sinensis Description: “Maiden Grass” is an appropriate name for such a tall, graceful and striking plant. Arching silvery leaf-stalks reach 6 to 8 feet high and are topped by fruiting stems that end in large feathers. It provides year-long interest wherever planted, but serves well as an anchor at the end of a border, or as an exotic companion for shrubs. Especially beautiful when breezes move the feathers. Medium growth rate. Growing tips: Grasses are easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer in the spring at a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio). Mulch with organic material in the fall to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Grasses that die back completely in the winter can be cut back in the very early spring to rejuvenate the plant and evergreen varieties which survive the winter should only be cleaned up by removing dead growth. Height: 4-6 feet Spread: 3-4 feet Attributes: Accent, container, drought tolerant, landscape specimen, near water gardens or ponds, mass planting, under power lines.
