Botanical Name: Imperata cylindrica rubra 'Red Baron' Description: A unique Imperata from Japan commonly called Japanese Blood Grass. It grows 18 to 24 inches high and has blood red foliage that is very impressive, especially with the afternoon sun behind it making it glow. Plant in groups for striking accents, or fronting borders, in full sun and well-drained soil. Wherever you plant it, Red Baron will draw attention. Growing tips: Grasses are easy to grow, and adapts to most conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer in the spring at a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio). Mulch with organic material in the fall to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Grasses that die back completely in the winter can be cut back in the very early spring to rejuvenate the plant and evergreen varieties which survive the winter should only be cleaned up by removing dead growth.
