Botanical: Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ragra’ Description: A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® shrub. A small to medium, early blooming selection with large flowers that range from strong blue to purple depending on the soil; add aluminum sulfate to the soil to encourage blue flower color. The blooms are large and long lasting. This plant has excellent mildew resistance, and makes a great container plant. Growing tips: Best in well-drained soils that have been amended with peat moss, leaf mold or compost. Flourishes by the ocean. Pruning is usually not needed, but may be pruned immediately after planting. Fertilize in early spring by applying a slow release fertilizer specialized for trees and shrubs. Follow the label for the recommended rate of application. Flower color is affected by soil pH. For blue flowers the soil must be more acidic and for pink flowers the soil must be more alkaline.
