Botanical Name: Betula papyrifera Description: A new cultivar from NDSU selected for its superior winter hardiness and excellent fruit display. Prairie Radiance® is a small tree with a low branched trunk or multiple stems, truly an all-season small tree for the north. It produces a large quantity of delicately pink colored capsules which begin in mid-August. By mid to late September the capsules split open exposing bright red arils. After the leaves drop, the gray barked twigs set off the sequential color changes of the fruit, a beautiful sight over an extended period.
